The Best Jackets of 2026

The Best Jackets of 2026

Updated October 2026. The jacket is the piece people spend longest deciding on and keep the longest, so this list is deliberately broad: overshirts, blousons, blazers and a denim jacket with real weight. Compared with last year the mix has moved towards mid-weight layers in melton wool, cotton muslin and brushed check that can be worn from early autumn through to spring, with fewer heavy single-season coats.

Ranking was by evidence rather than preference: best-sellers over the last 90 days, return rates and how far each jacket stretches across the rest of a wardrobe. Velira's offer is designer-inspired pieces in premium fabrics, shipped free worldwide with tracking, covered by 30-day returns and priced below retail.

1. Brushed check overshirt

Brushed check overshirt at Velira

Worn open over a tee or buttoned to the neck over a roll-neck, a check overshirt is the most reached-for jacket in most wardrobes for good reason. The brushed wool-blend cloth is soft, warm for its weight and holds a crease at the sleeve. The fit is relaxed and sized to layer, so stay with your usual size from XS to XXL.

2. Melton wool blouson

Melton wool blouson at Velira

Melton is a dense, felted wool that blocks wind on its own, which is why this blouson feels warmer than its weight suggests. The cut is short in the body with a ribbed hem and cuffs, and it sits well over a hoodie or a chunky knit. Fit is regular; if you plan to layer heavily underneath, take one size up.

3. Zip-up high-neck muslin blouson

Zip-up high-neck muslin blouson at Velira

Lightweight cotton muslin and a zip-through high neck make this the transitional layer on the list, the one for a windy morning that turns mild by lunch. It packs flat and creases honestly, in the way good linen does. The silhouette is boxy and runs a little large; most people size down for a cleaner line.

4. Paisley printed belted jacket

Paisley printed belted jacket at Velira

Pattern does the work here: a paisley print on a soft, drapey cloth with a self-belt that draws the waist and turns a jacket into an outfit. It wears best over plain pieces, a cream knit or a black slip dress, so the print has room. The belted cut is forgiving on fit and true to size across XS to XXL.

5. Cropped single-breasted blazer

Cropped single-breasted blazer at Velira

Cropping a blazer to the waist changes how it layers: it sits over high-rise trousers and under a longer coat without adding length. The wool-blend suiting cloth has light structure through the shoulder and a clean lapel. Fit is tailored through the body; if you have broader shoulders, go up one size.

6. Fitted single-breasted blazer

Fitted single-breasted blazer at Velira

Closer to a jacket you would wear to work than anything else here, this blazer is cut fitted through the waist with a single button and a long lapel line. The cloth is a smooth, mid-weight wool mix that drapes rather than stands away from the body. It runs true to size and sits best over a fine knit or a shirt rather than a heavy layer.

7. Embellished denim jacket

Embellished denim jacket at Velira

Heavy denim with embellishment at the collar and front panels, this is the jacket for when the outfit underneath is simple and the occasion is not. Rigid at first, the denim breaks in across a few weeks of wear and softens at the elbow. The fit is cropped and boxy; stick to your usual size unless you want it to close over a thick knit.

8. Pleated vest

Pleated vest at Velira

Fine micro-pleating gives this vest a sculptural line while weighing almost nothing, and it is the only piece here you can wear under a blazer and over a shirt in the same day. The pleats are permanent and the fabric shrugs off creasing when packed. One honest note on fit: the pleats stretch, so it accommodates a size either side of your usual.

How we chose

We started with 90 days of sales across the jackets collection, dropped anything with a return rate above the store average and then ranked on versatility: how many seasons a jacket covers and how many of the knits, shirts and trousers on the site it works over. Cloth weight and construction counted for more than print or colour, which is why two blousons and two blazers made the cut. Prices are in AUD and sit below the retail reference for comparable pieces.

Choosing a jacket by cloth, not by name

Decide on the weather first and the shape second. Melton wool and brushed check are for cold, dry days and take a knit underneath; cotton muslin and micro-pleat are for wind and travel and want a shirt. Blazers should be chosen on the shoulder, not the chest, because a sleeve head can be let out and a shoulder cannot. Denim needs time, so buy it on the snug side and wear it in. If you are between sizes on anything structured, go up; on anything soft, go down.
